CSI Congregations in North America
The Church of South India (CSI), formed in 1947, is one of the largest protestant churches in the world. The majority of CSI members reside in southern India. However, as people began to travel to distant places for education and better opportunities, their desire to keep their identity and culture by establishing their own CSI congregations grew. In 1994, with the approval of the CSI Synod, the "Council of CSI Congregations in North America" was formed.
The history of the Church of South India in North America goes back to the 1970s, when many CSI Malayalee Christians migrated to the United States and began forming CSI congregations in major US cities.
Discussions about forming a council began over the years, and an adhoc Council was formed in July 1994 at the North American Family and Youth Conference in Toronto, Canada, under the leadership of the then Moderator, Most Rev. V.P. Dandin, and Madhya Kerala Bishop Rt Rev. Dr. M.C. Mani. Deliberation on the draft constitution took place during that meeting. The Rev. Thomas K. Oommen was the vicar of the CSI Malayalam Congregation of Greater NY, Woodhaven, who later became the Bishop of Madhya Kerala Diocese and eventually CSI Moderator. The Rev. Thomas K. Oommen, Mr. Koshy George, and Mr. Alen John were appointed as conveners to inaugurate the CSI Council of North America.
The CSI North American Council was formally inaugurated on December 10, 1994, at the Woodhaven Church in New York. Many bishops were present, including the CSI Moderator, Most Rev. V.P. Dandin, and the former CSI Moderator, Rt. Rev. Dr. Victor Prem Sagar, CNI Moderator Most Rev. Chandu Lal, Jacobite Bishop His Grace Zacharias Mar Nicholovos, Orthodox Bishop His Grace Dr. Thomas Mar Makarios, Marthoma Bishop Rt. Rev. Zacharias Mar Theophilus, and representatives from Episcopal and UCC churches.
Following the inauguration, the first CSI Council of North America formally convened. During the meeting, the Rev. Thomas K. Oommen was elected Vice President, Mr. Mathew Oommen was elected Secretary, and Mr. Bobby Chandy was elected Treasurer.
Currently 28 CSI Congregations in North America under this Council's umbrella.
